My first post for 2024! It’s a brand new year and February also means we are officially starting a new cycle and year with the Year of the Wood Dragon on February 10th.
February is also the month of love (or self-love in my case lol) and, as expected, love-themed songs will be pouring in. Three of them in particular were both released in the last few days and I wish to showcase them below.
Solar once again delivered one incredible masterpiece. Out of all of her Gamsung tracks, this is one of my favorites to date. Her vocal range outshines most other singers in the industry and I really love the comfort the heartfelt melody and lyrics bring to me.
Albeit, this is yet another sad love song about unrequited love. I don’t really agree with the translation of the title from Korean to English. Technically, the literal meaning of the title is “I love you but/Loved but” and the lyrics speak of a person who is choosing to walk away after having loved another person from a distance and can no longer bare the pain of not being together. It’s not really because the love is gone lol
These moments make me think of my situation and whether or not I would walk away. I think I would not. I would wait for you, if I feel there is a chance or some sign that things can work out.
I think love is worth fighting for, no matter what. Love is one, if not the most important reason we feel happiness in life (romantic love, filial love, love for our children, etc).
As this song is technically representative of what I have been (and still am) experiencing for the last 20 years in one form or another, it naturally brings comfort when I hear it.
Life is easier if one does not carry such heavy burdens all the time. Otherwise life is quite tough. I don’t know why my love life is always so tough.
Thank you Solar for bringing forth your talents in showcasing an emotion that is way too familiar to me and to many others, I am sure.
IU’s and V’s collaboration came as a total surprise. I don’t believe there were many hints about them doing a song together so it was nice to actually not have something leaked ahead of time.
The MV is so beautiful from a vocal, acting and cinematography point of view. We can attribute several metaphorical interpretations to the object chasing them and threatening their happiness and love.
Similarly to them running away from the inescapable, I, too, feel like I have been running away as I am constantly being chased by those who envy every little step I take to better myself or to find happiness that is beyond what they have.
I hope not only love, but also justice and fairness can win.

Lastly, Lee Hi's release from a week ago also touched me deeply as she showcases the power of words in a relationship and how important it is to seek comfort from those who we love and who love us back. I am a big believer in communication, especially when it comes to romantic partnerships. You cannot, under any circumstances, have any long term potential and build trust and respect with a partner unless you have open communication and supportive words from each other.
I like that many songs are starting to focus on more mature themes that are often forgotten by couples who have known each other for a long time. It's so easy to lose respect once you get close to someone and you see their good and bad sides. This is something more couples should work on as the moment that respect is lost and communication dwindles is when the relationship starts to break down.
