Yaloo - Super Coral Anti Fragile

“Super Coral Anti Fragile”, Yaloo’s newest exhibit under the “Wicked Ocean” umbrella, finally arrived in Montreal and premiered at the Elektra Gallery on Thursday, March 30th. I had the pleasure of being invited to attend the opening night where I had the opportunity to also meet the lovely Yaloo, the artist behind this masterpiece.

Yaloo spent a lot of time in recent years training in 3D animation, which allowed her to create other exhibits such as Homo Paulinella the Lab, Pickled City, and Super Coral Anti Fragile. You can read more about her training and past experience on the Elektra website: https://www.elektramontreal.ca/wicked-ocean-yaloo

Her newest exhibit, “Super Coral Anti Fragile”, associates the changes a coral undergoes underwater when subjected to tough environmental elements, and the resilience some of the coral display in front of such elements. At first glance, I associated her work with the anatomy of blood vessels inside the human body (since I come from a health science background), only to find out that, in fact, it represents the coexistence of humans with non-humans in a future world. It is meant to portray a living system inside a city. The main image of the exhibit (please see below) looked like a heart to me initially. After further elaboration from the artist, I can interpret that as representing the heart of this futuristic city where humans and non-humans can coexist.

The entire concept is very avant-garde to me and futuristic in nature, but also very real. We might be in such a situation in the not-too-distant future, especially with the rapid advances in technology and other forms of sustainable battery and electric power.

The biggest difference for the showcase at Elektra was the usage of only monitors for the entire exhibit with no projectors. The artist said it was a fun challenge she encountered this time around.

While absorbing the intricate message in this exhibit, I couldn’t help but think how our future, at times, seems fragile and easily threatened but maybe we are far more resilient than we believe. I think the name “antifragile” used by the artist really fits the state of our current generation. We are slowly developing ways to respond to the threats our society poses by becoming antifragile, yet beautifully different at the same time.

I want to thank Yaloo and the Korean Cultural Centre for bringing this exhibit to Montreal for all of us to enjoy.
