Art in all its forms creates a bridge connecting the pulse of a culture with the outside world.

Busan, a city formed of about 3.4 million residents has been an epicenter of cultural development for quite some time. It hosts many art exhibitions and film festivals that serve to introduce the public to Korea’s complex history and to further elevate its artistic presence by showcasing a variety of artists who delight our senses with their talents.

Busan hosts several 5-star hotels along its coastline that provide the perfect travel experience for all art lovers coming to visit. Guests can have access to unique cuisines and culinary experiences specific to the region. Busan also serves as an international port that facilitates economic growth and further improves relationships with neighboring countries. Being at the intersection of Eurasia and the Pacific Ocean, shipments and transports are accessible from anywhere in the world.

To date, Busan hosted various exhibitions with different themes, most of them being with an international focus. I will present a few of the exhibits to come this year, as well as those held in past months in Busan.

  • The Busan Biennale 2022, a biannual event in its 11th edition, is an international contemporary art show that brings together artists from around the world showcasing their art in accordance to a theme. This year’s theme is “We, on the Rising Wave”, a concept that will tackle the history and transformation of Busan in modern times, as well as the global connection everyone shares and how that relates to Busan. The main questions this Biennale will tackle is how can everyone live together in the current changing ecosystem and environment. The Biennale will take place between September 3rd to November 6th, 2022. The official website will be released in June 2022, however, in the meantime, here is some information found on their beta site:

  • The Westin Josun Blue Art Fair was held between February 17-20th at the Westin hotel by the Haeundae Sea. The characteristic of this event is that it uses hotel rooms to showcase artists by displaying art in a meaningful manner, concurrent with the theme sought by the artist. The event itself usually attracts international artists in an effort to impart messages to the world. If you want to discover for yourself the type of artists and art presented at the event, please use this hashtag on Instagram. #BlueArtFair

  • Beyond Landscape Exhibit was held in March of this year as part of the Lotte Gallery and had as a main theme empathy and escaping reality through memories. You can see some photos from this lovely small exhibit by visiting this Instagram page: @culturechampion_kr.

This account showcases many other exhibits that take place in the Busan area, therefore, serving as a                       perfect guide to those interested in art in this city.

  • Another important permanent museum that exists in Busan which serves to educate young generations and others about Korea’s history is the National Memorial Museum of Forced Mobilization under Japanese Occupation. The Museum is probably not easy to visit as it showcases life during those times through pictures, objects and other raw materials collected and preserved during those times. Regardless, it is an important aspect of Korean culture that must not be forgotten. If you want to know more about its location and opening hours, you can visit its official websites below:

In addition to many art exhibits, Busan also hosts its annual Busan International Film Festival. This year it will take place between October 5-14th. Given its rich history of 26 years (its first edition was held in 1996), this year’s festival is bound to be exceptional in the films that will be presented. Selection is still underway, but this is a great time to plan for October.

Thank you for reading this brief introduction to the many incredible artistic activities that Busan hosts each year that serve to continuously enrich and preserve not only Korean arts and culture, but also art around the world.
